Salmon fishing
The best rivers in Finnmark is Børselva, Stabburselva and Lakselva. All three rivers can be characterized as salmon rivers and are great for fishing. Fishing time is from mid-June through August.

The lower 10-12 km of Lakselva flows through areas with settlements (farms) while Børselva and Stabburselva mostly runs in outlying areas. Stabburselva runs right through Stabbursdalen National Park. From Lakselv it’s about 12 km to Stabburselva, 42 km to Børselva, while Lakselva flows into Vesterbotn, a few km from Lakselv.

Børselva:
The salmon goes about 35 km up river. It is a typical flood river with crystal clear water that has a greenish tint. The river flows through an area with dolomite forming Silfarfossen where it has cut through the dolomite.

The first 20 km of the river follows the road up towards Børselv Mountain. Along most of this distance there are excellent fishing spots. Farther up the river there are fewer pools and further between them, before you come to Badnisjokfossen where most of the fish stop.

Stabburselva:
Stabburselva is one of the best salmon rivers in Finnmark. The river is known for its big grown salmon. The salmon goes up to Njakkagorzze about 30 km from the river mouth. The first 9-10 km up to Lompola alternates between rapids and pools. From here to Stabbursfossen the river is dominated by long pays with rapids in between. The first 2 km up to the 6-meter high waterfall Stabbursfossen has many fine fishing spots. The river is rough over the salmon stairs and has several falls. Some salmon migrate up the Dæbbojohka and Njakkajohka, which are tributaries to the main river. Njakkajohka is the largest tributary to Stabburselva in the National Park.

Lakselva:
The river runs along highway E6 approximately all the salmon-bearing stretch, some 30 km. There are excellent places to fish the entire stretch up to the north end of Nedrevatn, about 22 km from the river mouth. The section also consists of several large lakes with good fishing stretches in between. Lakselva is one of Finnmark’s best salmon rivers.

In addition to the three major rivers are several smaller rivers in Porsanger excellent for fishing salmon, trout and char; Brennelva, Ytre Billefjordelva, Smørfjordelva and Lille Porsangerelva (Lebesby). Within 1.5 hours driving you manage to reach a total of 12 to 14 salmon rivers.

Trout and char fishing:
The trout and char in Porsanger are great and willing to bite. You have almost 5000 lakes to choose from. July and early August is the best time for fishing. Trout can be found in most water in Porsanger. In some lakes, however, the char is completely dominating. This applies particularly to large upland lakes.

Otherwise, there are also lakes with pike, perch, whitefish and grayling in Porsanger. These species are found mostly in the southern parts of the municipality. Most of the lakes in Porsanger have a mountain lake character. There are almost no lakes of the type forest ponds which otherwise are fairly common in southeastern Norway.

The presence of lakes is greatest on the east side of Lakselv Valley and E6 south towards Karasjok. The waters are close together, it is often shorter than a stone's throw between them.

Hunting:
Small game hunting

Small game hunting in Finnmark is mainly grouse shooting and the hunting areas are large. The county's area is just over 46 000 square kilometer. The hunting terrain is dominated by vast open plains with low birch forests and bush. In the upland areas where some of the grouse are located there is virtually no vegetation. Enthusiasts believe Finnmark, Porsanger in particular, to be the best hunting area in Norway.

Bird watching:
Along the beaches of the inner part of Porsangerfjord are some of the most important wetlands in our country. The area is visited by thousands of migrating birds. Some of the birds are endangered, like the extremely rare dwarf goose.

At the north end of Stabbursdalen National Park is Valdak Marshes and Stabbursnes Nature Reserve. Here you can see herds of polar sniper, arctic terns, eiders and lots of other species that enjoy the dinner plate along the beaches.

Til topps i Porsanger:
"To the top of Porsanger" started as a collaborative project between Stabbursnes Nature House and Museum and Statsskog Finnmark in 2004.

The project objective is to motivate people to start hiking and get acquainted with the beautiful scenery in the municipality. The peaks are not dauntingly difficult, so both young and old can participate.

The following nine peaks are in the project:

Bringnes, 395 moh
Hestnesfjellet, 189 moh
Silfarfjellet, 357 moh
Caskilvarri, 609 moh
Stallochokka, 249 moh
Mærdevarri, 488 moh
Nuorttat Njeaiddan, 517 moh
Stuorra Binjalvarri, 528 moh
Uhca Jeahkir, 237 moh

It is possible to buy the participant booklet with road maps to the starting point of each peak, and there is a marked trail to the tops. You can also participate in the competition held in the fall. Contact Stabbursdalen Nature House and Museum for more information.

Of course it is possible to climb the peaks without participating in the competition. And from there you will enjoy a spectacular view of the world's northernmost archipelago, namely Porsangerfjord.

Quad bikes
Many people like to get to the famous Finnmark plains with the use of ATVs. The Sami people use these actively as a part of the reindeer migration, and supervision of the herds. In Porsanger there is a well developed network of trails designed for ATV, like there is for snowmobiles in the winter. It is also possible to hire transportation and guiding in to the plateau, and then be picked up again when the fishing trip is over. There are countless opportunities for fishing in Porsanger, and a trip with ATV can be a fun experience as well.

If you wish to rent ATVs or other such services you can contact Arctic Steel & Machining (ASM), which is the local Polaris dealer at +47 78 46 30 00.

I tillegg til alt dette har Porsanger mer og by på. Aktiviteter som sjørafting, golf, og ridning er noen eksempler.
